School District 72 will get five new bikes.

They aren't just a regular bike. Instead, these bikes are stationary, ergonomic bikes with attached desks. They are called "brain bikes," and the Campbell River Eagles Ladies Auxiliary are donating them to the district. The five bikes are worth $5,000 ($1,000 each).

"For a child who has a chance to ride the bike, it can be a soothing and rewarding experience," said Catherine McKenzie, a spokesperson for the Ladies Auxiliary.

The bikes are designed to be quiet when in use to minimize distraction during class instruction. Riding the bike helps students manage stimulation and can be moved to a quiet location to help them when they become over-stimulated.

“Supporting our children and their school experience is a key priority for the Eagles”, said Barbara Johnston, a past international officer of the Eagles involved in the initiative.

The five bikes are going to Georgia Park Elementary School, Cortes Island School, and Sayward School, and two are going to Quadra Elementary School.

"The Eagles are planning more bikes in the future as the needs of the schools grow," said McKenzie. "Aerobic activity has a significant impact on learning."
