View Royal’s most attractive gardens received well-deserved praise this week.
On May 28, the town announced the winners of Best in Bloom – a contest that encouraged residents to nominate and vote for their favourite local gardens between April 22 and May 6.
“Thank you to everyone who nominated, toured and voted in this year’s ... contest,” the town said in a news release. “The nominations showcase the beauty, creativity and care that View Royal residents bring to their gardens.”
The manicured, green yard in front of 1250 Stancil Ln. placed first, and was followed by those at 22 Fenton Rd. and 2775 Shoreline Dr.
The first-place winners, Fraser Reid-Burdon and Scott Newin, moved into their View Royal home three years ago. Reid-Burdon explained the pair worked hard to get their garden looking ship-shape.
“It was a horrible mess when we bought it. It was super overgrown,” he said, adding that they worked on it every Saturday and Sunday for a year. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s satisfying.”
While it was a tough job, the pair enjoyed every minute of it.
“We both love doing gardening and yardwork," added Reid-Burdon. "My degree is in landscape architecture and my partner has a minor in fine arts, so we love putzing around the yard and updating it."
Council members are set to deliver prizes to the three winners.
