37 YEARS AGO (1986): Members of the 100 Mile Nordics and BC Team competed in two Vachon Canada Cup Races in Prince George. In the opening day 5 kilometre skating race, Debbie Steitzer, 15, finished second overall among the women, Anja Rasmussen, sixth overall, and third in the senior women’s with Randy Ostby, seventh. On day two, Ostby placed third overall behind Kamloops Ida Mitten and Yvette Guillet with Steitzer third in the 10 kilometre classic race. This gave Ostby second and first in the Junior Girls and Steitzer a first and a second. Rasmussen was fifth overall, good for a second bronze in the Women’s division.

28 YEARS AGO (1995): A loaded logging truck headed south on Wilcox Road hit an icy patch while attempting to stop and slid through the intersection, rolling into the south ditch. The truck took out the power pole and safety concerns arose as the collision also brought down utility lines. “The telephone line came down and hooked onto the front of the logging truck so it was just like a slingshot,” said RCMP Cpl. Doug Hicks. Around 150 BC Hydro customers were without power in the Forest Grove area while Interior Power crews repaired the line. A B.C. Tel crew was also on site to repair the telephone line which had been torn down but not severed so telephone service to the area was not disrupted

22 YEARS AGO (2001): RCMP for 100 Mile House, Clinton and Williams Lake were to take on the 100 Mile House Midget Rep team in the new year in the First Annual Community Cup. “In 100 Mile House we’ve got a good working relationship and we’d like to continue it,” said Const. Gerry Hansom. “It gives kids an opportunity to interact with us on a personal level instead about there in the working environment. Hansom said he wanted the games, which would see RCMP age 24 to mid 40s test their skill and speed against 16 and 17-year-olds, become an annual event. Organizer Shelly Carr said they were hoping to raise money which would go towards tournaments for the midget rep team.

13 YEARS AGO (2010): The South Cariboo Lioness Pennies for Diabetes project got help from Grade 6 students at 100 Mile House Elementary school. Janice Poggenpohl’s class raised $817 for the program that helps to send local children with diabetes to a special camp on the Sunshine Coast, designed specifically for them. The students worked in pairs and were responsible for getting support and donations from one other classroom in the school. They made a presentation to their class, drew and hung a poster and set up a donation bucket. Money was collected and recorded daily and Poggenpohl said many of her students chose to give up their lunch hours to help with the project.
