41 YEARS AGO (1982): A resolution by the South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce to change the name of Birch Avenue to Main Street was soundly defeated at a village council meeting. Mayor Ross Marks said that every town seemed to have a Main Street which made 100 Mile House unique. Alderman Carol Pitkin agreed and said, “Let’s keep our character.” Marks also said the name Birch Avenue was part of an alphabetical sequence of street names in the town. The council was unanimous in its decision to keep the name of Birch Avenue unchanged.
26 YEARS AGO (1997): Three local women countered cold weather and empty stomachs by handing out free soup in front of the community hall on Fridays. Trudy Silverwood, Jacquie Boyd and Pat Friesen did it for the satisfaction they got from helping out their fellow human beings. Friesen said the common denominator between the three women was they were all Christians and handing out the soup was a way to show God’s love in a practical way. They said the response had been good during the one-and-a-half hours spent handing out the soup each Friday.
20 YEARS AGO (2003): 100 Mile Fire Rescue had more calls in the first nine months of 2003 than in all of 2002 said then-fire chief Darrell Blades in his third quarterly report to council. “It was a pretty messed up summer for us,” the chief was quoted as saying. Sixty-three calls were dealt with in July, August and September alone and involved more than 630 man-hours of work. Grass and wildland fires made up a large portion of the calls along with complaints coming in from residents that neighbours were not complying with burning restrictions and nine false alarms.
10 YEARS AGO (2013): The third annual Cariboo Horsey Ladies Christmas Banquet and Charity Auction was set to be held Nov. 14 at the Wildman’s Family Dining and Lounge at Interlakes Corner. More than 250 horses were represented by the women who attended the previous year. The evening was to be a celebration of Christmas and the love of horses. The charity would be chosen by ballot vote that night with all proceeds from the silent and live auction being donated to it.
