49 YEARS AGO (1974): Property owners at the Imperial Ranchettes subdivision formed their own association. Newly elected president Bud March said the first meeting would be held on June 9 at the home of Jim and Mary Watters at 1 p.m. Other officers included Brian Gardner, Ernie Sampson and Mrs. Nora White as secretary. The main issue was cattle running at large in the subdivision. Interested people along with members of the BC Forest Service and the Department of Highways were invited to attend.

34 YEARS AGO (1989): Six-year-old Kevin Stewart and nine-year-old Audrey Daniels each won a bike at a bicycle rodeo sponsored by the RCMP in 100 Mile House. Around 410 youngsters took part in the event from Grades 1, 3 and 5. Const. Paul Higgins coordinated the event. Skills taught included signalling for turns and stops, obeying all signs and yielding the right-of-way to pedestrians. Higgins also stressed the need to wear helmets. Each child entered a draw for a boy’s and a girl’s bike. Other prizes were a helmet, locks, horns gloves and safety flags.

24 YEARS AGO (1999): The provincial campground in Lac la Hache was one of 14 parks added to the park reservation service. Cariboo Parks District manager Steve Mazur said 20 of the 83 sites in the park were added as it had been getting busy in past years. The advantage of being in the system was people living on the Lower Mainland would then have the ability to make a reservation in the area up to three months in advance. The remaining 63 sites were to stay on a first come first served basis. Most of the other parks added were on Vancouver Island and the coast.

12 YEARS AGO (2011): Almost 150 children attended a free bike rodeo hosted by the Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre’s Success by Six Program and Interior Health. There were races, games and a road safety course put on by the RCMP. The kids all got a free hotdog or hamburger as well as a drink. Eleven new bikes, helmets and drink bottles were given away. The event had been planned as part of National Safety Month and to promote physical activity in children six years of age and up. The Success by Six program manager said the day was a great success.
