45 YEARS AGO (1978): Robbie Carter and his friend David Krenz, both 11, were swimming in the creek at Centennial Park when they noticed a baby hat floating in the water. Carter reached out to pick up the hat when he saw a child snagged by it’s diaper in some bushes. Krenz pulled the baby out of the water and Brain Jones began to administer mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. A teacher, Brian Graham took over from Jones who was hampered by a broken arm. They successfully revived the child.
38 YEARS AGO (1985): Educo, the outdoor education school, introduced special courses for girls aged 10-14 for the first time. The content of the program was slightly altered, said organizer Ron Skeene. Girls had expressed interest in the past at open houses and he said a program had been in the works for quite a few years. Skeene said Educo had changed quite a bit over time with the emphasis moving away somewhat from the physical challenge to more of a mental, emotional and spiritual development and discovery while maintaining the physical element.
30 YEARS AGO (1993): Peewee rep goalie Lee Barrick, 12, and bantam rep forward, Jamie Law, 14, both won a spot on minor hockey’s Team B.C. The Team B.C. contingent travelled to Vancouver with 17 member teams in each age group in August of the same year. They played against teams from New York, Detroit, Minnesota and all across Canada. Coach Mike Scorse said, “It’ll be the best kids in North America playing against each other.” Evaluators interviewed each player and offered tips on the strengths and weaknesses each displayed.
16 YEARS AGO (2007): A search and rescue team assembled to look for a missing Lac La Hache woman was called off after she emerged from the woods. The woman had gone horseback riding early the same morning. Around 7 a.m. the horse came back without her. James Seely, the president of the 100 Mile and District Search and Rescue, said her family had called the RCMP and the RCMP called for a search. In addition to an RCMP helicopter and two rough all-terrain vehicles, there were around 30 members from 100 Mile and Williams Lake. They were just getting ready to head out when the woman appeared.
