62 YEARS AGO (1962): The heaviest snowfall of the season knocked out television, disrupted power and telephone and delayed buses and traffic across the South Cariboo. A total of 28 inches fell in 100 Mile with more in the outlying areas. Highways, BC Hydro and BC Telephone crews worked overtime to clear roads and keep phone and power service going. Government graders worked non-stop to clear highways with company and private bulldozers pressed into service to keep mills, farmyards, and private driveways clear of snow. Scores of motorists were stranded in snowbanks.
41 YEARS AGO (1983): The Cariboo Regional District held a public meeting at the Forest Grove Community Hall to talk about the formation of a fire protection area for the community. A volunteer fire commission and a fire department of around 35-40 members had been in place for several months. The main reason for the meeting was to see if area residents would approve holding a referendum to purchase a new fire truck as the truck they had was from 1948. The referendum would ask for a tax levy of two million maximum to pay for a new truck.
26 YEARS AGO (1998): Sarah-Jane Kowarik was born at 5:24 a.m. on New Year’s Day. She and her family were from Vancouver but were spending the holidays on some property owned at Drewry Lake Ranch. Being born in 100 Mile was not by chance. Her two-year-old sister Samantha Mary was also born here and their parents, Susanne and John Kowarik, were so impressed with the service of the hospital they decided it was the only place for their second child to be born. Sarah-Jane was supposed to be born on Christmas Eve but did not arrive until New Year’s Day.
14 YEARS AGO (2010): The Adult three on three Christmas Madness Tournament was a two-day event held Dec. 26-27 at the South Cariboo Rec Centre. The event, hosted by Canlan, featured six teams of nine skaters and a goalie. After round-robin play of four games, Daniel’s team advanced to the finals where they defeated the local Takagi Team for first place. The winners received hockey bags while second place got Coca-Cola prize packages. “It was a great opportunity for boys coming home for Christmas to play some hockey,” said Canlan spokesperson Kersti Foote, adding that most of the players were local.
