43 YEARS AGO (1980): Two break-ins at the 108 Supply and Wheelroom brought the RCMP to the 108 Mile Ranch. The thieves broke the glass in the door of the 108 Supply and appeared to have just stolen cigarettes. Nothing else was disturbed and there were several packages found in the parking lot. Owner Olaf Hansen suspected the barking guard dog scared them off. Around 2:30 a.m. the same night occupants of two light planes were camping by the Wheelroom when they heard the sound of breaking glass. Nothing was taken from the facility due to the thieves being interrupted by the campers.
33 YEARS AGO (1990): The District of 100 Mile House lost the ability to control business hours after the Supreme Court upheld an appeal against a Quesnel bylaw which would have seen shopping limited to Sunday afternoons only. Administrator Haggstrom said shopping hours would remain the same as they had over the previous year - wide open. In reaching its decision to uphold the appeal the court ruled local governments do not have the power to decide when merchants could open their doors, previously something within the jurisdiction of towns and cities.
23 YEARS AGO (2000): The District of 100 Mile House was granted $20,000 for a marketing strategy called Tourism Gold. The money was used mainly to produce a colour brochure promoting the South Cariboo. The promotion tied in nicely with Gold Rush Trail Marketing Initiative, aimed at marketing the entire Gold Rush Trail. Mayor Donna Barnett said the project would put 100 Mile House on the map as a premiere tourist destination and help lead the community to greater economic diversity and stability.
13 YEARS AGO (2010): Lone Butte Rocks was a success with entertainment, a craft fair, a poker run and even a petting zoo put on by the Lone Butte 4-H Club. The Lone Butte Volunteer Fire Department held an open house for the event and the four volunteers manning the hot dogs and coffee said the day was busy with people coming in to find out what the department was all about. The children were also taken for a ride in the rescue truck. Business owners said the poker run was a huge success. Everyone was busy and it was great to get people into their stores who’d never been there before.
