The 100 Mile Youth Initiative is hosting a community gathering to discuss their proposed skatepark project this weekend.
On Saturday, May 10, from noon to 3 p.m., at the proposed skatepark location on the north end of Centennial Park, members of the initiative will be set up to talk with community members with feedback on the park. Maria Roddick, the initiative's founder, sent out a letter last week to residents along Evergreen Crescent and Dogwood Avenue, whose properties border the park, to invite them to attend.
"We understand that new projects can raise questions, and it is completely normal for residents to seek more information," Roddick said. "Our team is looking forward to listening and engaging in open, respectful dialogue."
In the letter, Roddick notes that skateparks are more than just recreational spaces for youth. They also offer them a healthy and positive outlet and encourage physical activity and a sense of belonging. Both she and the other members of the initiative believe that with thoughtful planning and collaboration, the skatepark could become a valuable addition to the 100 Mile House community.
Roddick noted that anyone unable to attend the meeting can email their thoughts or concerns to 100mileyouthinitiative@gmail.com. She asks those who choose to do so to include their street address as well as a note explaining if they support or don't support the skate park and why.
"We kindly ask that all email responses be submitted by May 31," Roddick said. "We truly appreciate your time and input and hope to see you at the gathering."
