'Terrifying' Central Saanich intersection gets new pedestrian crossing

Parents had previously campaigned for their children's safety at Mount Newton Cross Road and Central Saanich Road

Once described as ‘terrifying’ by parents concerned for their children’s safety, a busy intersection in Central Saanich has become more pedestrian friendly, thanks to action taken by the District of Central Saanich.

The new crosswalk has been painted at the intersection of Mount Newton Cross Road and Central Saanich Road. Reflective signage at the crossing, as well as ‘crosswalk ahead’ warning signs, have also been installed.

Locals had previously said crossing the intersection was a daily challenge for children catching the school bus, and other residents accessing the BC Transit stop. A problem that has existed for generations, becoming increasingly more dangerous as development in the area increased traffic.

In September, reaching breaking point, concerned parents lobbied the council for a safe crossing, street lighting and a reduction in the speed limit.

“It's really scary,” said Bobbi Sylvester, speaking to Peninsula News Review in September. “[Vehicles] don’t even slow down.”

“I don't want anything terrible or tragic to happen to any of the children or any more people on this road like it happened before,” added Chelsee Sylvester, who walks her three children to the school bus at the intersection every morning.

The district says rapid flashing beacons will be installed at the crossing in early December, explaining they chose to paint the crosswalk ahead of time as the ‘line painting season’ is coming to an end.

The area is said to be a priority in the district’s Active Transportation Plan, with other improvements planned, including a pathway along Central Saanich Road south of Mount Newton Cross Road.
