Interested residents of Central Saanich are invited to apply as paid on-call firefighters.

The Central Saanich Fire Department is expanding its team of paid on-call firefighters at its stations throughout the municipality.

Residents who are interested in applying can attend an information session on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 7:30 p.m. at Fire Station 1, 1512 Keating Cross Rd. Successful recruits will participate in a comprehensive training program to become fully certified firefighters and play a valuable role as first responders in their community.

“In addition to the life and career skills our paid-on-call firefighters gain, there is an incredibly strong sense of community and camaraderie that attracts people to this role,” said Central Saanich Fire Chief Kenn Mount.

“We welcome physically fit and diverse applicants who want to be leaders in the community, be part of a team and can make a long-term commitment to the department.”

Central Saanich currently has 45 firefighters, including six career staff. A paid on-call firefighter responds to community emergenices 24/7.

Greg Michell, a Central Saanich paid on-call firefighter, says it’s been the "best thing" he's ever decided to do.

“Becoming a member of the Central Saanich Fire Department has been an amazing choice for me and my family. The unity and synergy that runs amongst the group is fantastic," Michell said.

The deadline for applications is Friday, Sept. 13. Applicants must be residents of Central Saanich; previous firefighting training or experience is not required.
